The Big Hoop - Part I

3 parts of the Big Hoop

The BH allows you to sew 2 or more designs totaling 225mm X 90mm without the need to rehoop your fabric. This is great for embroidering sheets/pillowcases or any other border. I find it to be very useful for embroidering Criswell lace where I can sew many designs before the need to rehoop.

The plastic template has the embroidery area marked with black lines.

Print a paper template of your design. If you do not have a program that will print all of the design as one, print the individual designs. Cut them out and tape them together into a ‘master’ template.

____________________________________________

Lay  the plastic template over the paper master template to make sure it will sew using this hoop.

The center of this template has an ‘overlap’ area equivalent to 15mm.
This means you cannot sew two 120mm designs in one hooping. If one of your designs is 120mm, the second one can be no larger than 105mm.

Unless you can hoop perfectly, you need to allow yourself some room to move the design within the sewing machine window. I like to have at least 5mm room to play with. This means I don’t consider designs larger than 100 - 115 mm for this hoop.

____________________________________________

Mark the X and Y coordinates on your fabric. This shows a pillowcase edge  marked for embroidery.

____________________________________________

Pin the master template onto the fabric aligning the X and Y coordinates.

____________________________________________

Print individual paper templates of the designs.

____________________________________________

Cut them out.

____________________________________________

Place them over the master template aligning the design. Note: the X and Y coordinates of the individual templates and the master template are not necessarily the same so don’t try to align them. Just align the design.

If you have a lightbox, it helps tremendously with this part. You can also use a light box set up - click here.

____________________________________________

Place your stabilizer under the fabric. Lay the inner hoop with the plastic template over the design.

This template has two little slots near each end that fit on matching notches on the inner ring of  the hoop.

The inner ring of the hoop has a notch on each end that designates the center. The center is also marked with a black line on the plastic template.

Align the X (horizontal) coordinate on the paper master template with the center line on the plastic template.

____________________________________________

Pick it all up as one unit and place into the outer ring of the hoop. Tighten the thumb screw of the hoop.

____________________________________________

Remove the plastic template.

____________________________________________

DO NOT put the hoop on the sewing machine yet.
